All hands on deck at staff litter picking session

Thank you to the colleagues who volunteered their time with Irvine Clean Up Crew on a litter picking session on Tuesday, 25 June.

Getting involved with local litter picks is a great way to improve the area, meet new people and spend time outdoors!

With colleagues from across our services including Communications, Facilities, Roads, Sustainability and Transformation, the action-packed hour-long session took place with the help of Irvine Clean Up Crew, who kindly loaned colleagues the litter picking equipment for the session.

Kathryn Sloan, Irvine Clean Up Crew Community Volunteer who led the session said: “I would like to thank everyone involved in our litter pick in June.

“A great effort by all involved which made a huge difference to the area, tackling the area underneath the shopping centre and on the pathways at either side of the Low Green.

“It would be great for others to come along next time and get involved in trying to keep Irvine beautiful!”

Area Catering Officer, Sheila Dalton also took part.

She said: “I wanted to get involved as I am appalled daily at the amount of litter on our streets and in our parks. I along with others covered the area at the bottom of the mall, along the side of the river and across at the grassy area behind M&S.

“I absolutely would recommend others to adopt a spot/do their own litter-picking. I was amazed at the amount of litter – a whopping 14 bags – we managed to pick in a short period of time, but at the same time disappointed that we had to do it in the first place.”

If you are interested in arranging your own litter pick the Council’s Streetscene team can offer support. Find out more about voluntary litter picking on our website.

Alternatively, you can visit the Keep Scotland Beautiful website to find established community clean up groups in the area.

“I’m really proud of everyone who gave it their all on the day. Our Streetscene team and community volunteers like Irvine Clean Up Crew do an amazing job week in and week out, but this was a chance for us to roll up our sleeves and give them a helping hand. It was also a nice opportunity to get to know friendly faces from other teams that I haven’t met before. I would definitely volunteer my time again!”
