Be spooky (and sustainable) this Halloween

Staff are reminded to please recycle, re-purpose and re-use wherever possible this Halloween.

Pumpkins make the perfect winter-warming soup so why not chop them up and make a pot rather than chucking them in the food waste?

North Ayrshire see a spike in litter and waste during Halloween from discarded costumes, sweet wrappers and single-use decorations. Across the UK a terrifying 18,000 tonnes of pumpkin waste is generated each year, with most of that ending up in landfill.

Consider donating yours to your local charity shop, library or local textile recycling location so that your frightful garments can come back to haunt everyone again next year.

A Spooktacularly Sustainable Halloween in North Ayrshire!

Halloween is creeping closer and North Ayrshire is getting ready to get spooky! But whilst we are becoming witches, ghosts and ghouls, let’s not forget to stay green behind the scenes.

Whether you’re dressing up, decorating or heading out trick-or-treating, there are plenty of ways to celebrate sustainably.

  1. Go plastic free
  2. Make your own costumes
  3. Choose natural decorations
  4. Reduce waste where possible
  5. Consider composting your pumpkin seeds
  6. Or make pumpkin soup
  7. Donate costumes and decorations
  8. Choose non-toxic face paint if you’re hiding your identity and avoid single use products

Don’t forget – safety first! Be visible, stay with friends and family and keep an eye out for little ghosts and goblins on the move.

Let’s make this Halloween a scream – for the right reasons! Have a hauntingly good time everyone,

The Energy and Sustainability team and the Climate Champions!
