One of our North Ayrshire modern apprentices was recognised at Holyrood on International Women’s Day.
Looking back on Scottish Apprenticeship Week (6-10 March), North Ayrshire Council is celebrating the talented individuals who have taken the opportunity to join the Council’s Modern Apprenticeship Programme.
The MA programme is aimed at 16-19 year olds, and provides young people in North Ayrshire with the unique chance to learn key skills through workplace learning and training to kick start their career.
One such apprentice who has been making their mark, is Caitlyn Houston who was presented with the West of Scotland Apprenticeship Award in Scottish Parliament by MSP Pam Gosal.
The former Irvine Royal Academy pupil received the accolade last week at Holyrood on International Women’s Day (Wednesday 8 March).
From Irvine, 20-year old Caitlyn has been recognised for her contribution to supporting New Scots with language skills and boosting their self-esteem.
Over the last year, Caitlyn also trained as a Bee You Mental Health Ambassador where her role was to build a legacy in North Ayrshire where young people are supported to learn about and raise awareness of suicide prevention and the importance of mental health and wellbeing.
Donna Anderson, Youth Participation Officer shared her pride for Caitlyn: “Everyone who has had the pleasure of working alongside Caitlyn is absolutely over the moon for her recognition award. She is a shining example of what our Modern Apprentices are – dedicated, hardworking young people who are passionate about making North Ayrshire a fairer, happier and more equal society for all, where everyone has the chance to succeed and realise their full potential.
“Her drive, passion and ability to go the extra mile is exactly why Caitlyn is the worthy winner of this year’s West of Scotland Apprenticeship Award. Caitlyn should be really proud of all that she has achieved. She is a brilliant role model to young people across our six localities and I hope her story encourages them to enrol too as MA trainees in this year’s Spring intake.
“Well done Caitlyn, on behalf of everyone in Youth Services, we wish you the very best of luck in your new role at Castlepark Primary school.”
Joining North Ayrshire Council in August 2021, Caitlyn has made exceptional progress throughout her apprenticeship, completing her SVQ 3 in Youth Work with ease while making a difference to communities.
Caitlyn commented: “I am blown away that I have been selected as the MA stand-out for the West of Scotland, I can’t believe it!
“Although I have worked with so many different residents, I have particularly enjoyed working with the Swans group of New Scots who meet weekly to play football together as I’m able to help the young Syrian’s to get support on any issues they may be facing as they get used to their new lives here.
“I’ve also really enjoyed assisting with the planning of events such as Y-Dance – a young person’s dance showcase, mountain biking at Eglinton Park and mental health and wellbeing sessions in my role as Bee You Ambassador.
“Thank you to everyone in the Employability team and Connected Communities team for supporting me.
“North Ayrshire Council has offered me so many great opportunities since embarking on the MA Programme and I’m really looking forward to taking the next step in my career now, I’m excited for what the future will hold.”
Caitlyn has now secured a position within Castlepark Primary School as a classroom assistant and continues to do sessional Youth Work throughout North Ayrshire.
