Important update on use of Artificial Intelligence

The use of emerging technologies harnessing the use of artificial intelligence is increasing rapidly.

Technology such as chatbots, digital assistants (robotics) and text/language generation tools (generative AI, such as ChatGPT) are now widely available and it is essential that we, as a Council, are aware of such developments and mindful of both the powerful benefits and risks these technologies can present.

As a local authority, we have legislative responsibilities to protect the information we hold including under the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.

Additionally, maintaining a robust cyber security posture plays a key role in maintaining the integrity, confidentiality and availability of Council data.

Due to the nature of some AI-enabled technologies, and the potential impact on information security, rights and legislation, it is essential that a robust policy is in place prior to a controlled rollout of the use of any AI enabled application within NAC.

This policy is currently being drafted by the relevant stakeholders within the Council and will require to be approved by the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) prior to implementation.

It is essential that any team considering use of similar technologies corporately engage with Information Governance and Cyber at the outset to ensure the relevant privacy and cyber impacts are addressed in the appropriate manner and that no AI enabled technologies are implemented in the absence of both the corporate policy and relevant governance checks.
