Book now for the Young Scotland Programme

Young Scotland programme leaflet broadening horizons, developing new talent and building confidence and skills

The Young Programme exists to develop the communication skills and broaden the horizons of people in the early stages of their working lives. Established in 2002, the programme takes place twice each year (spring and autumn) in Ayr at the Western House Hotel – part of Ayr Racecourse in South Ayrshire.

Booking is open now for the spring instalment of the programme taking place between 26 and 29 May 2026.

What is involved?

Through discussion and dialogue, the personal testimonies of inspiring speakers, and the delegates' own presentations on questions of 'current interest or controversy', the programme helps to build confidence, stimulate debate, and increase awareness of the world around us.

Who's eligible?

People aged 18 or over who are considered by their employers to be in the early stages of their careers. There is no upper age limit. Names of delegates should be supplied no later than the event's closing date for bookings.

Why take part?

By nominating a member or members of staff to take part in a Young Programme event, you will enhance their communications skills and presentational abilities; inspire them to have confidence in themselves; and expose them to a wide range of ideas, thoughts and life experiences. Everyone who completes the course will receive a certificate, in recognition of an outstanding achievement.

Preparation

All attendees will receive a delegate pack including guidance, travel information and advice on preparing an argument paper by email on the event's closing date. Nerves over public speaking are natural and common! The Young Scotland Programme team will do their best to offer support, guidance and advice to make the event a rewarding experience, with a happy and relaxed atmosphere.

Cost and booking

If you are interested in being part of the programme, discuss this development opportunity with your line manager as there is a fee per delegate - inclusive of accommodation and meals - of £1,380 plus VAT (total cost £1,656). Spaces are on a first come, first served basis – and these are limited!

So, if you wish to proceed – and have discussed with your line manager – please email Irene Somerville (Learning and Organisational Development Adviser) who can help to progress your application before the closing date of Wednesday 8 April 2026.

Further information can be found in the Young Scotland Programme 2026 brochure and testimonials are on the Young Scotland Programme website.
