An election count with tables for ballot papers - and people working in the background

As you will be aware, the Scottish Parliamentary Election took place on Thursday, May 7 – with the count taking place the following day at The Portal in Irvine.

Voters chose their constituency MSPs in Cunninghame South and Cunninghame North, and they also had a second vote that helped to determine the seven regional list MSPs in the West Scotland Region, which includes North Ayrshire.

The successful candidates were:

Organisation of the election here in North Ayrshire was a huge undertaking for the Council staff who spent months ensuring it was an open and transparent democratic process.

More than 55 different polling places were set up across North Ayrshire, with 116 polling stations within these where people placed their vote.

A total of 116 presiding officers, 118 polling clerks and information officers were also employed to cover all polling stations.

At the count itself, there was in the region of 170 staff - the vast majority of these being enumerators who counted the votes.

Colleagues across different services played vital roles in arranging this successful election in the months leading up to polling day. There were some very long days and evenings involved along with a lot of hard work and planning.” Our Election Manager Tracy O’Hara and her team, the Building Services team who arranged all the logistics including set up of the polling stations and collection of ballot boxes on the night, our Depute Returning Officers - Aileen Craig, Mark Boyd and David Hammond - postal vote staff and all poll and count staff who had long days in the polling stations and at the count – everyone carried out their duties well. I would like to thank everyone for their professionalism and hard work in ensuring the smooth running of the election.
