Modern Apprentices look to 2026 with optimism

The council’s current intake of North Ayrshire Modern Apprentices recently attended a welcoming Meet and Greet at council headquarters.
Held in the newly refurbished fourth floor training suite at the Eglinton Committee Room, the event was a celebration of the 61 Modern Apprentices currently enrolled in the workforce.
North Ayrshire Council's Modern Apprentice programme is aimed at 16 to 19 year-olds living in North Ayrshire and it is designed to give young people the opportunity to learn key skills through work and training to kick start their career and progress in meaningful jobs and positive pathways.
This is part of the council’s wider Working North Ayrshire programme, and the Modern Apprenticeship programmes allow successful candidates to earn while they learn, developing industry recognised qualifications to progress their careers, gaining skills, knowledge and work experience along the way.
The Modern Apprenticeship programme is at the heart of the council’s community wealth building approach, supporting young people across our six localities to secure employment within North Ayrshire Council or local businesses.
Completing qualifications, with hands on learning and delivery is what makes this employability pathway so beneficial to successful candidates.
Chief Executive Craig Hatton congratulated the Modern Apprentices who have been making their mark across council services. He said:
For many of you, this will be your first introduction to the workplace and what an impression you have made. Pursing a Modern Apprenticeship is a fantastic way to embark upon your career and the council provides a unique opportunity where you can work across a host of services to improve the lives of local people and communities. It is encouraging to hear feedback already from our assessors and line managers who have been impressed by the level of commitment and enthusiasm that you have brought to our workplace since beginning your roles and I would encourage you to keep up the good work as you set your goals for 2026 and make your mark here in North Ayrshire.
Council Leader Marie Burns also attended to meet with the current Modern Apprentices, she shared: “Early on in my own career I was an assessor for Modern Apprentices, so I have seen firsthand the impact this employability pathway can bring.
“Our Employability team are on hand to support you every step of the way, and with benefits like earning while you learn, industry-recognised qualifications and gaining practical on-the-job experience, local government offers a unique blend of work experience and study for successful MAs. Good luck to you all as you work alongside us in the heart of communities to build a fairer, more equal North Ayrshire for all.”
Feedback from colleagues who have benefitted:
Sonia Sharkie, Team Leader Business Support shares: “I’m a strong advocate for the Modern Apprenticeship (MA) programme as it provides recruits with valuable hands-on experience, equips them with transferable skills, and helps build their confidence as they take their first steps into the world of work.”
Kirsty Kirkpatrick, Senior Development Officer, People and ICT: “The MA programme is a vital catalyst for any workforce. Young people bring energy and ideas that any employer would welcome!”
Josh, Modern Apprentice in our Procurement team shared: “My apprenticeship has been very valuable to my development as I am getting increased responsibilities as time goes on and feel I am developing my skills well.”
Modern Apprentice Kaycie working in Community, Learning and Development: “My apprenticeship is working very well for me, it allows me to learn more about myself and build on skills I never knew I had as well as learning on the job and working towards an SVQ.”
Since starting in 2023, I have gained a tremendous amount of confidence and social skills. I am much better at talking to new people and engaging in conversations. Also, I have improved my time management, reading, writing, and decision-making skills. I am so happy I decided to apply. It has truly been the best decision I’ve made.
